VFIS History
After recognizing a critical need for first responders to have adequate insurance protections, Arthur J. Glatfelter launched innovative, specialized volunteer firefighter coverage—the first of its kind in the industry. What began as a small initiative has since grown by leaps and bounds.
Today, VFIS proudly insures thousands and continues to lead the industry in providing protection to those who serve our communities as emergency responders. VFIS drafted the first specialized insurance policy in 1969 to meet America's emergency service organizations' unique needs.
From the beginning, VFIS has had a solid commitment to education, training, and consulting as part of our efforts to help the emergency service community. We continue to expand these efforts. Since 1980, we have handled nearly 450,000 claims for emergency service organizations, and the number grows daily.
The South Carolina Connection
The relationship between VFIS and Correll Insurance Group began in 1981. The first VFIS customer for Correll Insurance Group was the Corinth Fire Department in Cherokee County. At that time, Don Yager worked in the Gaffney office and discovered the VFIS Program for his volunteer fire department. In November of 1983, Don hired Jon Jensen, the current CEO of Correll Insurance Group, to do production and marketing.
During that growth period, VFIS became a major Fire and Emergency Services insurer in South Carolina. In 1992 Jon brought on Darrell Hood as a part-time Driving Instructor to assist with providing training to our customers. Darrell continued in that role until 1997 when he came on board as a full-time producer and was responsible for the tremendous growth of the VFIS Program. In 1999, Mr. Jensen became the South Carolina Regional Director for VFIS.
Today VFIS of South Carolina continues to be a leader in Service, Risk Management, Training, and Consultation for Emergency Service Organizations. We pride ourselves most on the personal service our team members provide.
